If he's anything like me, then, although he might like woman generally (not necessarily in a sexual way as such), he might just have an overall preference for guys, so has said he's gay to keep things simple (which admittedly could be a problem in the future). Being Bi can be complicated at the best of times.

I think the significance is that he's come out as a gay sportsman at the beginning of his career. The others (and they have been few and far between) have tended to wait until they are about to retire.
