Sadly I find this rather reassuring. When the Paris scheme started people said 'it wouldn't work in the UK because the bikes would just get nicked'. As though everything is always worse in the UK

i guess, but it works elsewhere. It would be nice to have a society where this didnt happen, it's a good idea in theory.

I think they tried to keep going, but in the end it was just costing them too much. Or do you mean there are so many bikes out there that there would be no need to nick em? I'm sure that people would still nick them because they are "bored".

lol, surprised they can get off their bums to nick them, as they are always on strike ;o)

It looks like JCDecaux want to renegotiate the Velib contract (i.e let the state shoulder more of the costs), hence the negative PR release about vandalism and missing bikes...

More positively:

"Each bike travels 10,000 km a year and 42 million users since launch"

Sad. JCDecaux runs the same scheme at home in Luxembourg and I think it's a great idea. I'd be really sorry to see it ruined by idiots.
