Is this an 'a fish all' thread? I understand the contemplating, peaceful bit but I don't understand the rod bit.

I understand the difference between needing a bit of kit in order to roll around the countryside but I might only need eyesight + a resting place for reflecting upon 'stuff' whilst watching water. I often have a whale of a time. :becool:

I have no interest in fishing whatsoever, but my neighbour does, and often gives us a trout :becool:

Exactly why I'm not missing the point.

What's relaxing about sitting on a brown towpath watching brown water and the brown factory wall opposite all day?
Well fish somewhere else then.

I always thought the rod was just to justify sitting by the water all day and watching the world go by? Which seems perfectly reasonable to me.

I used to fish years ago in my school days, didn't have a school to go to so I went fishing. I got board with it after a while.

There are people I pass on my commute who will spend the whole day sitting on the towpath of a miserable inner city canal waiting to catch a fish no bigger than the palm of their hand.

I don't get it.

Hunter gatherer ? Natural men and their predator instincts ? I bet it all changes when they get a bite.

I think it's just an excuse to sit pondering. Without the fishing rod people would think your mad.
