So, my dining room table overlooks my grounds and on a number of occasions whilst eating we've watched as Mr Rat trots across the lawn and has dinner his self, dining in the bots and bobs dropped by the birds from the feeders.

My colleagues at work are advising all kinds of rat torture and destruction, warning that I'll soon be invaded by 1000s of rats otherwise.
I'm a bit unsure. I thought you were never more than 6 feet from a rat in an urban environment. Just cos this ones happy to perambulate through the garden shouldn't earn him a death penalty should it?

that sounds like a good offer
We had a largish rats nest in our garden when we moved here. A greyhound, 2 terriers and a lurcher pup made short work of it. 20 minutes tops and we had a garden with no rats nest in it. Of course, I then had a carcass problem
We've not seen any rats in the garden since but have found a couple of bodies in the mornings. We don't think that they lived in our garden though, just a short and fatal visit.

might just get away with not feeding the birds for a while - see if it does one and goes to find easier pickings

Read 'King Rat' by James Clavell, a good book but that will let you know you should kill it one way or another.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
