How do you know its the room thermostat thats wrong and not the thermometer (presumably) you're comparing it to?
Unless you're comparing it with 2 thermometers and going with the majority of course.

Actually, I reckon you'd need several, say a dozen, or more,to make sure you've got a really accurate result.
Because yesterday it wasn't misreporting by a couple of degrees. As a cyclist (am I allowed to say that on here?) I can assure you my hallway wasn't remotely close to 20c yesterday morning

How are you measuring the temperature? If it's just by feel, then you'll be lucky to get close to 5 C of the actual temperature - much worse if you've just come from somewhere warmer or colder or back from a spot of exercise (no, you're not allowed to call yourself a cyclist here ). The other thing is that if the thermostat is above a radiator or other heat source, or next to an open window or door, or in a draft, it'll report a temperature that's quite different from the rest of the room.

I suppose it's possible that a dry solder joint could affect the thermostat, though it's more likely it would just die. The simple way to test it is get a thermometer and place it next to it. Both thermostat and thermometer will be accurate to about 1 degree, so if there's less than 2 C discrepancy between them your thermostat is most probably working.

20, but it is an older dial type thermostat. I have thought about changing it to a digital one, but it works and when I last checked it a couple of years ago against a thermometer, it was close enough, so I can't be arsed.

I've had mine set to 18 and the heating hardly ever came on despite it feeling freezing cold. I was wary of setting it to 20 as it will just push the fuel bill up which is already a stupid amount for a small house
