They laughed at me when I said I would cycle to work!

I started a 13 mile each way commute last year, you just have to keep going, it does get easier. I think others have said above, but I found a complete rest day could sometimes be quite bad, making my legs even stiffer than they were before, having a day where I really eased off and cycled gently helped keep my legs moving.

The other good motivator was seeing all the money I wasn't spending on the bus fare everyday!

I have a 15 mile each way commute and it really hurt me, I spent months doing it one way and didn't really feel I would ever do it both ways and 5 x a week. One weekend back in May 2011 I just decided to do it and not stop doing it. A very painful 3 months, then it just got a little better every month. Still get the odd day here and there where it hurts but not often and mainly because I have been going to fast to often.

Progress will be quick, but just plan you pace at first, don't keep chasing times and PB's as that will be recipe for not doing it as often, plenty of sleep and good food etc.

40 lumpy miles is going to be tough, good luck and well done!

........ 15 miles one way ...... hurt you? Blimey. MTFU. P'raps you should do the 31 miles each way I do everyday, 5 sometimes 6 days a week, or 9 days on the trot I was doing over the summer.

There's no reason why anyone can't do that distance for a commute if they have a shorter route.
I have a 7 mile round trip commute. As it is I often arrive at work feeling ready to carry on cycling for the day and have to get off and change instead! I would commute further if needed (and sometimes do) but my work days start at 07:30 hrs and finish at 20:45 hrs and then I maybe back working the next day. There is a balance to be struck for me and the reason I don't cycle a longer route is I need get some sleep between shifts! The bonus is, I generally just work a 3 day week, I have time to get a longer ride at some point in the week.

Yes I can add the distance, but what I really would like is the challenge of the terrain. Where I am God made the roads with a ruler and a level, there are very few curves.

Yes it's a bit different for you.
Take Yonge St for example...

I was 46 and 18 stone and unfit crossing the north downs daily, of course it hurt. Anyway as willy waving goes yours doesn't add up to much..

Should be an incentive to improve then. I wasn't aware of your age and weight. Since you have mentioned willies you seen your's recently being 18 stone ? How come you let yourself go so much? I am a little older than you and weigh in at a little over half your weight. At work I get respect for the distance I have to travel in. It does help that a few of the other staff are cyclists though. :smooch:

I am 11.8 stone now, perhaps you should read the post first "was" is quite significant word as well as 2011 in the first post you replied too. How long have you been doing 31 miles each way for 6 days?

That distance must be quite tiring, day in, day out, plus work in between.
How do you find time for other interests, don't you feel like sleeping all day on your rest days?

Is that 31 miles on the road or the path ? :reading: Maybe it is you who need to MTFU rather than your look at me, look at me willy waving.

Well done to the OP, Andrew_P and Brian and keep up the good work.
