And, seeing as you introduced the word, how is this different from slaughtering a steer for steaks and sausages?

I'd assume that the giraffe was killed humanely and also that it was unlikely to be a variety in danger of being wiped out.

Last year I had the good fortune to be able to visit Kenya and hear about the problems they had with poachers and the kind of methods they used to get ivory and also evade capture. The Kenyans have a sanctuary where orphaned elephants are taken, usually up to the age of 18 months IIRC as any older they do not take to it. We also saw lions in the wild and a couple of times saw the aftermath of their hunting, a zebra and an elephant calf were the victims.

Do you really believe there is any similarity?

According to the Mail they used a bolt gun rather than a lethal injection, as the latter would prevent them from feeding his carcass to the lions. They also performed an autopsy on the carcass in front of zoo visitors, including young children!

If you don't want to see pictures of the lions tucking in, and the carcass being cut up in front of young children, don't click this link.

Why did it take eighteen months to bring Marius' life to an end?

Couldn't it have happened asap after birth?
There wouldn't have been as much for the lions then would there?

And anyway, the headlines would have been far more histrionic and emotive.

wow, it's amazing how many vegetarians there are here: walk into your nearest supermarket, and you will see evidence of dozens of senseless slaughter of healthy mammals. Where are their memorials?

And Kruger National in South Africa sells zebra skins, and Kudu sausages.

Poor Marius. Here he is sticking his head through his enclosure to accept a carrot or have his forehead scratched by whom he thought were his friends. Next thing you know, they're pulling him down to the ground, scrambling his brain with an humane killer, disecting him in front of school children and feeding him to the lions.
