I saw one of those squashed on the road out of Dorridge, bit more orange but definitely the same shape. Do you know what it is ? (yes i am a thick townie).

Looks like a mink.

That is what I thought, my guess would be that it is American Mink which is classed as vermin. Der alt, did you kill it?

Nah this wee beast keeps down the rats and mice in this area and the local neds at bay, plus being in the centre of Edinburgh it's a welcome relief from squirrels and pigeons ,it was surprisingly fearless of humans hence the closeness of the pic .. even had a look at the bike

I saw one of these when kayaking on the west coast of Scotland, near Oban. It was swimming. They are a real menace there, as they eat the eggs of local birds, and as they can swim even islands are not safe from them.

Not their fault, obviously, but kill the bastards...!

I used to work near RAF odiham and got quite used to chinooks flying low and dropping into farmers fields, hovering, rapid decents and such manouvers.
last year down here in Dorset one popped over a ridge passed over the car so low it cast a shadow. at the time had no idea what it was thought the engine in the car had blown, emergency stop out of gear to avoid further dmage and then caught site of the source of noise a sensory overload at the time.
can only imagine what it must be like inside.

the local private school has many old boys who work their way up the ranks in the military and most years we get a fly by for a memorial service and they are amazing

Possibly a stout or weasel maybe?

Interestingly (or maybe not) the height of an aircraft has virtually no effect on the size of it's shadow. A plane at 10 feet casts the same shadow as one at 10,000 feet.

...and there's a curious effect when you're in the actual plane. Low down, say 500ft agl, you can see your shadow. Higher up, 1500ft or more, and your shadow gets replaced by what appears to be a bright spot like from a magnifying glass.
