Not too far from Manchester.

Any suggestions?

There's the Museum of Science and Industry, a steam railway out Bury way, Liverpool Maritime Museum, Imperial War Museum northern branch, crossing the Pennines to Bradford there's the National museum of Cinema or whatever it's been renamed as with a huge IMAX screen and more curry houses than you can shake a stick at, The Bronte Museum at Haworth and the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway - plenty of indoor stuff there to keep them warm. Then for sporting stuff - Man City and Sale Sharks for soccer and rugby respectively a session at the velodrome might be of interest.

I've just talked myself into moving to Manchester ;-)

I don't have enough umbrellas for everyone!
That should be the title of a book by Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams.

What sort of age and (dare I suggest it of an antipodean) cultural interests do your visitors have? Is there a concert or show which would suit?

Age - almost retired
Cultural interests - non-popular! Classical music, arthouse movies etc.

With the time of year most large productions seem to be pantomimes, which I'm not quite sure would work out..!

Check what's on at the Cornerhouse cinema and the Contact Theatre.

Well, that would certainly be something different for them!

The NIA has the Bootleg Beatles and Jools Holland, which might appeal.

You could always take them to Old Trafford.

If they're older, Bridgewater Hall and the Hallé orchestra. Also the Royal Exchange theatre - wonderful.
