Build dens
Build treehouses.
Chop down treehouses...with the tree still attatched  (we were surrounded by woodland). Took me about a week to get through the trunk with a blunt axe ;).
Target practice with an air rifle. Usually all the airfix kits we used to make, but sometimes you were the target...sometimes the marksman (we used to wear duffel coats for some sort of protection
Go for infeasibly long walks all day....only came home when it was dark..or you were hungry.
Living on a mothballed airbase, countless hours, days, weeks even, exploring every last inch of the place.
Chiselling away for days at the bricks they'd sealed bomb shelters with...to see whats inside. Nothing  That's what's inside
Fishing all summer.
Climbing Poplar trees as high as you dared, then swing in the wind. Must have been 50 / 60 feet up.
Set fire to things...anything (inanimate objects only...nothing serious). Lighter fluid was a favourite.
Make flame throwers with aerosol cans.
Scrumping ....a house in the village nearby had a tree with damson plums......regularly raided.
Making go-karts. There wasnt a pram for miles that had a set of wheels on it.
Making French Arrows. Endless competitions with them.
Making spears...as above
Dont even talk to me about firework night...its a wonder we never killed ourselves :biggrin:

Jesus :its scary when you think back.

What's sad is how we all used to occupy ourselves. Not that easy in this day an' age. So I have to chaperone my kids all over the place. Would love them to have the freedon that I had + the freedom it gave my mother just to get the bloody house clean!

How could i have forgotten. H&S put paid to that forever, the b'stards

In school, we had to play the stupid tag version, not the full on tackling version:sad:
We used to do it in the courner of the play ground where there wasnt teachers watching though, and have a look out so if teachers came we got a shout

Have a war with your mates...
Get the hundreds of plastic soldiers you all had, place them in rows, behind tanks, make foxholes, hide them in bushes.....then bomb the bloody hell out of each other with lumps of dry mud out of the gardens.

Christ, it looked like a warzone by the time we'd done ;)
Did anyone complain...no

Mostly we'd head for the railway lines and play there. Magic it was.

Another great game was stone fighting. That was like snowball fighting, but you could play it all year round. The casualty rate was however somewhat higher.

Then there was staying in all day and playing video games. That was do-able in 1978.

Setting fire to stuff was always popular.
