The operating system for my Lenovo Thinkpad is on the hard drive. However the default boot order in the BIOS places this fourth in the list, below the CD drive and two USBs. Does anybody know why? I assume my laptop would boot up quicker if the hard drive was tried first.

Checking if anything bootable is in the optical drive and USB ports shouldn't take long?

I tend to change the default order on devices to place the hard drive first and only change to something else should I ever need to boot from an alternative media.

The only time it'll make a discernable change to boot time is if you leave a disk in the optical drive or a USB device connected whilst it boots up at it will spend, an albeit short, amount of time checking if the device is bootable if it is available.
