Anyone else had this horrid influenza-like cold? Silly question since it seemed to sweep the country

It knocked me off my feet for 2 days between Xmas and New Year and I've been in the car last week. Feel a whole lot better now so leaped back on the bike this morning

My god...it's only 3 miles and my chest was tighter than...well..a very tight thing. Wheezing, dry-coughing and struggling for breath.

Okay, I admit I went flat out half way, enjoying being back on the bike I kept out of the bus lanes and just put the hammer down in the main lanes until my chest tightened and I was forced to pootle

I hate pootling...I don't feel safe pootling

How long is this going to blooming last until it's gone?

I wanted to go for a run tonight....today was my day for getting back on the fitness trail and beginnng the build-up to hopefully my first half-marathon this year. I think running will have to be shelved until I can breathe

I had flu at the end of November, since then I have had mild colds, mainly runny nose and sore throat. which have been annoying more than anything else. I kept off the bike during the flu and for a few days after just to make sure but these mild colds just keep coming one after another.
The colds have not stopped me riding, I am slower at the moment due to a not cycling much in December due to being off most of it on leave. I did feel a little quicker this morning after changing back to my Marathon Plus's from my Marathon Winters, certainly alot quieter.

Yes both of us have the cold. Both of us have found it made previously existing breathing problems worse and we're both sick of it! Roll on 2012!

I don't mind the the crispy cold days with blue skies and frost but these few days it's been damp and no fun at all to ride in...nearly dragged the car out today, but i did not give in.Boardman power got me in !!!!!

If it's flu you'd have a hard job making it to the bedroom door, let alone the bike shed; if you're coughing up thick mucus it might be a chest infection and you'll need antibiotics; coughs will stick around for up to 3 weeks and colds for about a week.

If you come from a close family you could keep some combination of the above going for months!xx( .

Remembering young children are disease magnets.

I bought a new bike on 1st November and couldn't ride it at first due to a heavy head cold. Unfortunately this has continued on and off ever since including a course of antibiotics which cleared it up..... for about 5 days. At the moment I just feel as if it is nearly gone but, if the last 2 months are anything to go by then it could flare up again at any moment. Unusually for me it has not once threatened to settle on my chest but the terrible pressure of the nasal congestion has been almost unbearable at times, almost like someone pressing their thumbs hard on the back of my eyeballs. I have been determined and manage to ride my bike on the good days.

I'm sure having young kids at school playing with their snotty class mates doesn't help!!!

Chest infections apparently don't often need antibiotics and their use is quite counter-productive. Well, according to the NHS anyway. But what do they know!

Your GP will not routinely prescribe antibiotic treatment for acute bronchitis for a number of important reasons:

  • Most cases of acute bronchitis are caused by viral infections, which means that antibiotics will have no effect.
  • You are almost as likely to experience a side effect from taking antibiotics, such as vomiting and diarrhoea, as you are to receive any benefit from the treatment.
  • The more antibiotics are used to treat mild conditions, the greater the likelihood that the bacteria will develop resistance to antibiotics and go on to cause more serious infections.
Many experts believe that the reason there are so many dangerous strains of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, such as MRSA and multi-drug resistance tuberculosis (MDR-TB), is because antibiotics have been overused in the past to treat mild conditions.

If I have antibiotics I always catch a cold due to the nature of antibiotics. I prefer to try to listen to my body and give it a chance to fight off infections itself when I can - I see it as a bit like "exercise for the immune system"

Haven't been to the docs for 16+ years, possibly due to me realising that my doctor when I was younger liked the easy route of prescribing antibiotics just to keep patients happy

Anyway, glad to report that my legs now hate me, as last night saw get back into running after 3 months off by stupidly heading straight out for 9Ks around lower Derwent Valley in the pitch dark. Exercise now seems to be having the desirable effect of losening the last of the cold rather than tightening it and pushing it deeper

Yes I got this cold bug around Boxing day .
I had been going well In November . Going on 25mile cycles and In between running 5 Milers .
then,I decided to do a 10 mile Run. Which I did o.k
This was all during the bad weather .Frosty Icy and Snow . So I was getting quite fit and healthy. As I am In the Wilmslow half Marathon end of March .
The Bug seemed to come with the weather when It thawed out . So It was a set back . I have had to start back slowly with my training .
So as long as It doe's not go on your chest .You are o.k training . ( Listen to your body ")
But otherwise take It easy . As a virus will be pushed around your system quicker . And only make you worse .
 You will probably find you are over It now and the short runs and cycles and of course the LOVELY FRESH AIR . Away from the bug ridden central heated offices & rooms area's . You will be fine once again .
What a lovely place to run Derwent Valley . ;) Good luck with your half marathon .

For some days I've been waking up with gummed-up eyes, feeling like I've plunged my face into a hedge without goggles.
Optrex helps a bit, but the effect wears off.
And I look like Lord Sauron. Or is it that Lord Voldemort geezer (the one without the nose?)
I reckon it's the same bug, just different body parts.
