There is a strong case for giving up but I think we need to strive to make the world a better place and the people in it more pleasant to each other. There are some that will never alter their selfish mind-set but most people are kind and honest and lovely, so there is hope and there is a future. It will just be a slightly different one to the one we can imagine now. The planet has the ability to absorb and adapt to harm and overcome things by that adaption and will continue to do so whatever man throws at it so in the long-term whether mankind survives or not things will change and resolve themselves..

It isn't hopeless but the status quo view of the planet before the Industrial Revolution world has gone forever- technology and development and evolution does that.

We can never go back, only forward so let's enjoy the journey and hope and work towards a better future than the bl;weakness of war and famine and destruction.

The silent majority of good people can overcome anything if pushed. The world is still a lovely place to be @buggi and there are some lovely people in it who make it all worthwhile.

Which is all very well..... But we wont, short of some utterly mahoosive revolution which will probably turn into a war of resources and people, therefore defeating the purpose.

We have all the resources we need, we could probably start tomorrow, but what makes humans dangerous is that we can knowing stare our own annihilation in the face and do nothing.

War has changed- countries don't try to annihilate each other, it's more invasive and sporadic- that's why terrorism succeeds- we just need to 'train' bigoted and aggressive people to recognise that we are all the same. Encouraging the world population not to grow unchecked is important....effective word-wide birth control is needed urgently.
There are a finite amount of resources so whether the world population is controlled or not, eventually it will resolve itself- possibly in the way you envisage if the ultimate reality isn't faced head on but I'd like to think mankind is cleverer than that as a species.

I hope you are right. otherwise, we will wait, and rely on big companies/Governments to come up with ideas, so that the very people doing a lot of the damage, will then start/try/pretend to fix things whilst still having their own agenda, still control us and most importantly (for them), still take our money.

That will always happen MDB.

Exactly!

But these people are all part of the problem in the first place, so how can we really trust that everything would be done above board? The whole thing will stink as much as anything we are doing now.

Providing they don't run out of time first of course.

In the grand scheme of things, mankind is nothing more than a tiny blip in the ongoing story of planet earth. We've been around for about 10k years, the planet for 4.5 billion years.
The planet will carry on for billions more years until the sun expands and destroys it. Human beings will be long forgotten by then.
In truth, the end of mankind could well be the best thing that could happen to the planet; it will give nature a chance to regenerate and take its course unimpeded by us. 'Tis simply a matter of time.

I am lucky in the sense that I had the opportunity to see much of the World and have come across some great programmes out there. I have seen tree plantations, reserves, national forest both and land out at sea.

Much of it as the result of similar like-minded folks in the forum who have strong beliefs, forsaken materials posssesions to make it happen.

You just have to google and find it.

Umm - all I can find it in myself to say ...... "Dream on, mate." Said with sadness.

Far from depressing I see this level of organisation as impressive, those photos evidence that even if they are cherry picked to emphasise the negative.

Go human race!
