I am based in Oxfordshire where we have a lot of cycle paths, the one in questions is on a run to a large place of employment on a 60mph road, it is a good cycle path as in flat and well tarmaced so why don't cyclists use it and would rather hold up fast moving traffic?...

So am I... perhaps you could tell us where you are referring to?

But I also suggest you give some thought to your own question. You've told us the cycle path is "good", yet cyclists don't use it. How strange. Can you think of any reasons why that might be? Don't you think they would use it, if it really were good, if it gave them any benefits?

Actually the OP is perfectly correct !!!!

Around here there is a stunning ignorance of cycle paths and how they should be used....

Bloody cyclists - imagine not using such an excellent facility.

The OP must be laughing her head off, four pages in two days

Quite probably, however I have had people ask me very similar questions in complete sincerity... for quite a lot of drivers who have no experience of riding bikes in traffic, and find the idea terrifying, it is a matter of complete bewilderment that any cyclist would contemplate not using a 'cycle path' if one is provided. It simply doesn't compute, so does require an explanation on the off chance that the questioner does actually want to know the answer.

In which case why can't motorways be made safe for cycle users?

Anyway I think the OP is a troll but whatever, (S)he will be buying a bike when Oil reaches its true price!

As a car owner but infrequent user (I commute by cycle to work each day) should I pay less road tax? If not, should my road tax not cover me for time on the road whether it be by car or cycle?

I'll be honest, I have referred a few people to this and the CTC forums in the past, in the main so they could read past posts and ask genuine (polite) questions. People tend to get quite frustrated by what they dont understand, and sometimes giving them the answers aids respect and understanding. Misinformation adds to the chaos and neglect and anger.

I like this bit.......

"Firstly i will say i don't ride a bike and don't want to ride a bike, i have a car and i'm happy with it."

WTF - I have a car, I quite like it when I need to use it. I have 4 bikes as well. They keep me fit. very fit. More fun exploring the countryside on a bike than a car. Plus it's much faster using a bike getting to work than a car/bus/ferrari etc. PS we have two cars, but 9 bikes and 4 kids scooters in our house.

Cycle lanes. Usually rubbish - I liken it to 'you wouldn't take a Ferrari off road would you?'.

An alcohol fueled debate by lard ar$es ?

Suppose that the OP does represent a genuine query? If so, then some of you have been unforgiveably rude to a perfectly innocent person. If the OP is not genuine, then at least (mostly) sensible points have been made.

I suspect that the average driver would never guess that cycle paths are routinely decorated with broken glass, something which I presume is deliberately done by yoof "for a laugh".

Responses to the query about fluorescent clothing along the lines of "you should be able to see me" are just arrogant. I see myself as a cyclist who also happens to be a car driver and on a couple of occasions while emerging in a perfectly correct way from a T junction, I have not seen cyclists until nearly too late simply because they are wearing clothing which blends them into the background. This might be less of an issue in urban areas but I do think that cyclists using roads have the onus on them to make themselves visible, if they think that there is a chance that other road users might not be as obsessed with their health as they themselves are.

The reason (in my case) for such an 'arrogant' statement (which it was never meant as, trust me  )

Yes, your scenario can happen, and does....but that doesnt mean anyone (origional poster for instance) has the right to demand i wear hiviz. Under normal circumstances, a driver should be able to see me.
