There does seem to be a... certain lack of empathy from some people. Just because you know the ins and outs of computing, it doesn't necessarily follow that everyone has the same level of knowledge. Especially when you consider that most operating systems are now designed so that the internals are hidden from view. That is why Microsoft (spit!) have this very silly default of hiding file extensions. Not to mention that not everyone knows the difference between a .jpg and a .exe file. You can't assume that everyone has heard of trojans or SQL injection attacks.

To be blunt, it's victim blaming. An activity that rightly has been condemned elsewhere on this forum with regards to the FTA blaming cyclists. The very same principles apply here.

But there has to be a level of responsibility surely. Otherwise I'd be riding around with earphones on full blast and no helmet on.......

Seriously there has to be a level of responsibility. The law holds that ignorance is no defence when it comes to breaking the law, surely some level of responsibility has to belong to the person who wants their share of the Nigerians millions?

As an avid online shopper. (I detest walking around shops full of bimbling idiots out for a day by getting in my way!) I often get delivery reminders and the like and agree that scams are quite easy to spot. Which didn't stop clicking a link a few years ago only to get a virus on my PC. A moment's inattention is all it takes.

The best cure is to attach the softer body parts of the people perpetrating these scams to trains about to go in opposite directions and supplying them with a rusty razor blade. Nothing less is equal to the amount of time and effort they waste.

Yes I had one who kept up the correspondence for weeks as I explained that I needed £50 to get me out of the red before my bank would let me accept a foreign money transfer. He kept on thinking of ways I could raise £50 so he could give me £2 500 000! I changed internet supplier* before he gave up!

*I knew I was about to change so played him along and was quite disappointed when he failed to send me a Xmas card. He claimed to know my home address, although I hadn't told him and he never confirmed this.

Im opting out of this thread.

Im not sure if some people are playing devil advocate (very well) or mean what they are saying. Either way, Im not going to change my opinion and they wont theirs.

However, if they really believe what they are saying with their "Deserve what they get" comments then I hope they get 1000 phonecalls from George Agdgdgwngo

Over and outta here.

If you lose money through your own greed, sorry but tough. Otherwise we'll have to refund everyone who ever lost anything on the stock market.

Deliberately defrauding someone - or attempting to - is a criminal offence. Your continued attempts to conflate this with legal activities is specious and disingenuous. So the greedy should expect no protection from the law? That they're fair game for any and all con men? That everyone - rich or poor, greedy or generous - has access to justice is one of the hallmarks of a fair society. (And one, it has to be said, that our society has a less than stellar track record.) You're arguing that people should be treated differently - have fewer rights - purely on personal prejudice. Well, I can do that too. Anyone who disagrees with me, when I'm in charge, will be deported. To Cheltenham. Enjoy! (But don't worry, they've got a 24 hour Tesco )
