went down halfords to get a replacement and was told the conti travels have 1 year guarantee and he swapped and fitted it for me even though i didnt have my receipt

i know halfords gets slated a lot but 1 decent employee can do wonders for a companys image

I seem to remember that, in old repair kits, you got a peice of fabric (covered in something black on one side and white on the other) which I think was for temporary tyre repairs. Surely something like this or a bit of old inner tube over the sewn up tear, as Number14 suggests, would get you home if this happened mid ride. Other than that recycle it as a belt .

Another reason to wear reflective armbands is that they can get you home if this happens ( yup, done that). Looks to me like the brake pads have dived above the rim - this produces a sharp ridge that literally cuts the sidewall.

New tyre yes, but check the brake-pad alignment and sand away any ridge that has developed before realigning them.

In that case I'd be checking the edges of the rims. I have in the past seen rough edges which damaged the tyre (those were Mavics, many years ago); a bit of sanding sorted that out.

Edit: The Oops was because, being an old git I hadn't even considered they might be discs. Last time I looked straigth pulls were the new thing .

I has a spate of similar tyre rips with Duraskins a couple of years ago,where the action of levering the tyre onto tight rims caused the spiral wound bead to cut throiugh the casing round the bottom of it. This released a section of the tyre from the bead and ended up looking a lot like what you have there. Solved it by switching to the folding version.
