Well this year alone I’ve been spat at ( WVM) / had an empty can thrown at me (passing car)/ had a wheel trim almost hit me (passing car) / almost crushed on a corner (WVM again) and even been assaulted by a Duck of all things, but yesterday topped them all.

Returning home from my LBS and passing some youths on the cycle / pedestrian path few miles from home, I was shot and hit (left hand) by an air pellet fired from an air pistol. I can’t go into detail as there’s an ongoing investigation as the perpetrators haven’t been caught as of yet.

CCT footage is being looked at too.

This little episode involved two arms response units, a dog unit, five police cars, one police van and the police helicopter, also the closing of the carriageway to locate the weapon used.

I attended the police station today to do a photo fit of the main person who fired the weapon, but the computer system was down and I have to attend again on Tuesday.

I’m fine just a lump and a bruise on the back of the hand, but the last thing I’d ever thought would happen was to be shot at, at such a close range.

OMG as if we don't enough to contend with on the roads! I've had an empty bottle thrown at me and been hit by a car but being shot at really is taking it too far.

I'm pleased your okay and I hope the police catch the kids. I'm surprised they took it that seriously tbh. Not that I would have expected just a report to be filed but that's a fair old response. I guess anything involving firearms has all the red buttons pressed, regardless of the nature of the firearm.

The 'being shot at' take a while to get over.

Many moons ago (mid 80's) I just happened to be walking along the pavement when a man on the opposite pavement opened fire on a guy in a car, I was unfortunately behind said car.

He missed his intended victim, but hit the guy driving behind as well as peppering the shop windows all around me

Luckily a truck managed to "accidentally" drive over him, which stopped him shooting any other people, and it got me a number of days off work attending the Old Bailey

Coming from an army family where we were bought up 1st hand with the full and very serious ramifications of what a bullet (of any size) can do, I really hope that the perpetrators of the 'hit' get all that is coming to them

Unfortunately this is the kind of behaviour some scummy kids think is fun and the story will spread and possibly 'encourage' others, in the same way that some may think it's fun to throw tin-tacks along cycle paths/sportifs etc.

Glad that you weren't seriously injured or damaged!

If ever I caught/saw anyone do this, there wouldn't be much left over for the police to deal with.

There was a clown shooting at cyclists using a cycle path going through a park near Stevenage/Hitchin at the start of the summer. It was on the local tv news. Not sure whether anyone was caught but the cyclist who had been hit, when interviewed ensuring him a few minutes of fame on ITV Anglia local news, said the local police force response had been woeful. During the news report you can bet the plods nearly choked on their deep pan pizzas as they had been shown to be even more incompetent than usual. I don't know what happened as I heard no more on the incident. Maybe the clown just grew up, was shot himself or he/she was actually caught. Don't know. Pretty scary though cycling along and one is shot at .

You are in good company, riders in this years TdF were shot at with air rifles. One or two were hit with no serious injuries.

Glad you're not seriously hurt and I hope the police manage to catch the culprit(s). I was also hit with an airgun pellet earlier this year and not hurt but it could have just as easily have gone in the eye and that is what worried me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have mixed views on the police response. On the one hand, anything which causes injury is deserving of a police response. On the other hand, armed response vehicles and a helicopter seems rather OTT for an air-pistol when a more serious injury from something like a thrown bottle would not have been treated anything like as seriously.
