This under taking thing Picture added at page 5

Based on one posters accident today I just want to know whats the best and most safe thing.

I only have one road thta this applies to but its over a mile long, where there is a dedicated cycle lane and about 2 junctions on the left along the way.

in the morning there is always stop/start traffic, that goes from 3 mph, back up to 20.

I regularly travel in the cycle lane at 20 if not more as its fairly flat.

So should I over take all the cars when they are slower or should I continue along in the cycle lane even when undertaking?

cheers folks

It's up to you what you do. but which ever use caution! especially when coming up to junctions and driveways etc...

If the cycle lane is wide enough then i would use it, and i would slow down when approaching junctions.

An issue with using the right hand side to overtake is some people will just do random u-turns in traffic without looking and without indicating.

It's upto you what you do. Quite a bit of it would depend on how wide the road was and how wide the cycle lane was.

I always do two things, signal right and pull into the main traffic lane.

That way there is no confusion with my intention to travel straight ahead and as I am in the lane, the vehicle behind shouldn't overtake and turn.

I wouldn't undertake a slow moving line of traffic at speed in a cycle lane, I made that mistake 4 or 5 years ago and got taken of, looked like I had done 10 rounds with Lennox Lewis the following day. If the traffic is slow ride as part of the traffic or overtake, carefully, on the right

Another here for the overtake. I keep with the flow of traffic, more towards the right of the lane and overtake where possible.

I'm not sure I agree. If the road is literally a mile long and there are only two conflicts, and the cycle lane is well kept out of and wide, but the road isn't wide enough to overtake I don't see why someone shouldn't use the cycle lane if that's what they want to do and they slow down for the problem areas.

Either sit behind the traffic and ride in the middle of the lane, or overtake. undertaking is dangerous, and unnecessary.

Sorry but making a sweeping statement like that is rubbish. It is impossible to give an answer without knowing the road.

On my commute I have the benefit of a very generous cycle lane with few interuptions and as long as you are fully aware and take a postive road position on the approach to any left turns it is totally safe.

Its not really rubbish is it. Its a simple answer to a simple question. if you want to debate it for 15 pages and get to the same conclusion, feel free.

I'd usually say that this was true. However, the OP asked for an answer based on fairly limited information so the chances are that the sweeping statement is more likely to be right than wrong, IMO.

Why the attitude?

How an earth are you able to make the statement that the OP is incorrect without having any knowledge of the road in question ? Whilst there are a lot of cycle lanes that are clearly unfit for the purpose and should not be used if you value your life your sweeping statement that it is dangerous to undertake is wrong.
