You'll never learn FM

When I lived in a City I hardly ever drove. The only time I did drive was to get out to the countryside to go mountainbiking. Now I live in the middle of nowhere I do need a car to get to work, but manage to cycle everywhere else, and sometimes I do a bike-train-bike to work too. I would like to drive less, and I guess if I live in a city again I'll be able to manage it.

You'll never learn, the teachers said,
(the story of my life)
I heard it from partners, friends
(ex-partners and ex-friends)
so often, I began to think
they might be right...
But is it different with a choice?
The lack of this skill
(this basic skill for most)
defined me for so many years -
a conscious absense.
But am I prouder of the void
than what it meant?

I got my licence a couple of years ago, aged 37 - I'm hoping a change of location will make having one less necessary.

A lot of car drivers have become lazy. Even 'er indoors will think nothing of driving to a shop half mile away to get a newspaper rather then walk or cycle.

Tell me about it, I got my licence so I wasn't having to blag trailer lifts to auto testing events. It also meant I didn't have to warm the car up at the autotest & until it was warmed up it'd stall without a moments hesitation, added to this it also had about as much concession to comfort as a hammer to the head. Kinda gets you into the habit of only using the car when needed.

Having lived/worked in town, city and rural areas, it's much easier to be car-free in the first two than in a more rural setting.
