Thoughts on buying beater bike for winter?

Amerferanga, You seem to be losing sight of the argument which you want to have. I said that studs were a reality for many, you said that's not the case 'for the UK', apparently basing an assertion for the whole of the UK on the roads you ride around Sheffield.

There's plenty of country lanes round me that I wouldn't go near on a bike with ice across them. Others might be happy doing so, and good luck to them. I won't be dictating their options, nor disparaging their decisions, nor discounting items of kit based on nothing more than geography.

I normally do okay with hybrid tyres although knobblies are much nicer on frozen slush/snow etc. It's when i come to a stop and my foot slides away that i usually hit the deck in winter
