Thoughts on Commuting in Chelmsford

Well that's me been cycle commuting in Chelmsford for two weeks, not long enough to make a substantive opinion, but on the whole I think its a good place to commute. More drivers than up north (home) seem to be aware and actively look out for cyclists and are more patient; you do get the odd wvm, muppet, et al. but it seems to be a very small minority. You have to be more aware however, of the other commuters; as I was about to pull off tonight a rlj went across my path and at the next set of red lights a bike 1/4 wheel overtook me only to immediately drift in without looking when the lights went green. Ignoring these individuals on the whole however, I like the image cyclists present here, there's hardly anyone in lycra/helmet etc showing hopefully as the cruise by traffic jams how normal and efficient cycling is. Oh and the terrain and weather helps too ;)

I ride and commute in Chelmsford as well.. Road surfaces are a bit sketchy in places?
They don't seem bad to me compared to home but I haven't seen enough yet. I commute down Broofield Road/ Marconi Road/ New Street and I haven't went far enough on my leisure cycling either, which is limited to round town or the Chignals or Bishop's Stortford/Henham/Rickney or Maldon or halfway to Harlow. Might pop back towards Maldon today but see if I can avoid the joke of a Bridleway on NCN1.

Hlab, DON'T use Graces Walk on NCR1!!! Go about 300m North to 'Hurrell's Lane' and then rejoin NCR1 at the other end of Graces walk.,at Graces Lane...

Cheers, that's what I ended up doing, the Ford was a wee bit of a surprise and being on the folder with 16in wheels I opted to take the foot bridge, the very last section of that is missing but its still 10x better than the NCN :-)
