As I luckily now have some money to splash around as I see fit (£1500-£1800), I've started looking at carbon-framed bikes with the intention of using one for the occasional sportive, but mainly for speedy exercise to keep lard and decrepitude at bay during the week, and for longer, more leisurely rides at the weekends. My LBS has a Orbea Onix in my price range and before I go and have a peek and test ride, I wouldn't mind some thoughts from you good folks about it, or any other recommendations you might want to suggest I should be investigating. Cheers.

Whats the spec? Got a link to that particular model? If it was my money I'd consider another Ribble as I like the ability to build a bike with the components I like or look at Canyon because they look nice and are good value. There's a lot to be said for buying from the LBS though especially if they are competitive on price. Try the Orbea if you like riding it and love the look of it then why not. What's your current bike?

Shimano ultegra gears, Orbea Alu brakes, Shimano R500 wheels and Vittoria Rubino 700x23c tyres - all for £1700. Through a set of circumstances that are too long go into here, I'm currently riding a Norcross Blue with an aluminium frame and carbon forks with Mavic A319 wheels. (It doesn't seem that much lighter than my Ridgeback hybrid!)

I have both an Orbea and a Ribble, let's just say I'll never buy a Ribble again. My next purchase would be another Orbea, whether it be the Onix or Orca, not made my mind up yet.

My LBS is doing an Orca (next one up to an Onix) with 105 for £1600. Not sure what wheels though. Seems a lot of bike sellers scrimp on the wheels first.
