The cycle path was rebuilt a couple of years ago - backside tolerances differ of course, but I think it’s ok now!

I too avoided the cycle path mainly because the road was more than adequate. It isn't far in terms of miles anyway to Marazon and on my route I was going to go somewhat north from there anyway to go through Dartmoor to Exeter.
All in all, in my experience, all roads are busyish and you just have to get on with it if you plan to ride from one end to the other. A road that is quiet to day can be as crowded as hell the next. It's Hobson's choice really which route you take.

In my opinion, I think any sensible rider would do well to turn back at Lairg, the rest of the way north is dreary and unfulfilling.
In the context of an end-to-end ride this lacks sense.
Wrt landscape/terrain, I thought the remoteness north of Lairg to the north coast was its USP, either to Tongue or down the Naver valley to Bettyhill.
I cannot imagine how you form an opinion that heading east along the north coast Tongue-Bettyhill-Thurso to JoG is "dreary and unfulfilling". "Any sensible rider would do well to" note your thought and ride on.
