Just in time for the rain here! Still, it is probably more comfortable than last week's savage heat...

Got soaked last night near Bridgewater.
Better this morning

Somerset Levels are a welcome antidote to Devon & Cornwall

It rained very heavily this afternoon repeatedly.

By time I put on waterproofs it stopped raining, but roads flooded.

Changed routing today and slogged it up A38 nearly all day. Thoroughly enjoyed the faster roads, even with more traffic

Made it to Kendal and about to start the ascent of Shap Fell.

The one bit of the ride I have nightmares about.

Shap wasn't that hard tbh. Cornwall and Devon were worse!

Easy for you to say that🤣

When you are fat like me and also doing it solo carrying your luggage a 9 mile climb is a killer.

In D&C the hills were shorter and therefore easier.


Still i succeeded in climbing Shap and ended up doing my longest ride in over 15 years.

Started the day in Preston, ended it in Scotland at Gretna Green.

The plan was to get to Penrith tonight

That reminds me if this...!

My dad... bought a sidecar for his motorbike so he could take my mum, 2 year old me, and my 7 year old and 9 month old sisters up to Scotland for our annual 6 week holiday on the Scottish family croft. This was before the M6 was built so we had to travel up the A6. We got caught in a freak thunderstorm going over Shap Fell, soaking my dad with freezing rain. He got hypothermia and had to be helped by Shap locals into a pub in the village where they propped him up in front of a roaring fire to thaw out...After that he sent us up by train! Once we had the M6, he bought a car and started driving us up.

(On reflection, I suspect that it was actually when my older sister was 5 and I was 6 months old. It would be even crazier to have done it with 3 small children in the sidecar!)

Made it today over Beattock Summit and into Glasgow.

Day off tomorrow to meet wor lass who is in Glasgow visiting her daughter.

Only 350 miles left
