hi all,

i am in need of your thoughts.

i have scott genius ltd 2006. it is completely and utterly worn out. in fact at the moment it is ss as i was too tight to pay 300 quid for a third xtr groupset.
whilst ss is fine for playing it is no good for commuting on the road and hilly terrain. either spinning out or straining to get up big hills.

also this is the 4th winter my estate has been cut off and the brompton is useless at the moment on the ungritted roads and black ice.

so i am thinking of either spending money on reguvenating the scott or buying a surly pugsley frame.

what the scott needs and approx costs 500 quid for slx or 800 quid for xtr

slx chainset, front derailleur, rear derailleur, triggers / gripshifts, front shock service, new brake pads, new rear linkage bolt set as one is busted (may be covered by warranty on frame?), schwarble marathon tyres and a new seatpost as the current one is busted

however i would have a bike that would ride like the 5 grand it cost originally

i reckon i could buy and build the surly for approx 850 quid including snowcat rims and 4" tyres for winter and slimmer rims for commuting thru winter a by using the good bits from the scott

the brompton could be used for summer and mixed transport duties.

i would also like to use it for long rides over hilly terrain on road (60 to 100ish) and off road for things like lee quarry and mtl

any thoughts?

shifters were both cracked at the back, which i did not know until i removed them, they got binned. the current crank is a jeff jones stylee xtr. xtr rings are too expensive for approx 8 to 10k miles per year hence the down grade to slx idea. brakes are hope minis and fine. just needs new pads. the front mech and rear mech, i seem to have thrown away, tho i don't remember doing so. hope hubs on mavic 717 rims, perfectly fine, hope bb, headset, hope stem. all could be used on surly build. i think i am going to do the scott but just worried i will have it all to do in a few years again. plus the shock service is 100 a shock (x2). the seatpost is the 3rd i have bust and at 40 quid each i'm getting pissed off about that. i am just worried that i spend this money and then the rear linkage set up wears out costing more money. where as a rigid frame and forks will last decades.
