A Luxemburg is about 7 Isle of Wights, if that helps.
I once worked out the speed of light in terms of furlongs per fortnight. Which was useful.

Of course, any contributions welcome! The less traceable to any known standard the better, and something like that which isn't constant is ideal.

then may i respectfully submit the old chestnut.

"...as many grains of sand as on A beach"

a very fine grained measuring system if ever I saw several.

In the women's downhill skiing the other day they referred to someone jumping almost the length of a football pitch.

That would be a useless football pitch, if they were skiing on it, it must slope terribly!

I used the unit of the double decker bus for weight in my University assessed seminar on viking shipping. Even a relatively small longship could carry the weight of 4 double decker busses (without passengers) and the larger trade ships up to 11...

But they'd have to be melted down to cubes, they'd be too big to actually fit in the ships.

I understand that a new unit of measure for distance has recently been called a "Norm".

The definition relates to the distance by which Norm has missed the point.

It is generally considered to be close to 3.6 light years.

The Register gives a helpful set of Standard Units, including volume (expressed in terms of grapefruits), length in uncooked linguine, and area in terms of Wales (actually, nanoWales, which is a more useful everyday unit). A football pitch, for instance is about 195 nWa. Wales itself is obviously 100 000 000 nWa.
I personally think the CC measure of mass should be the Baby Elephant, where one BE = 100 kg under standard Earth gravity. A standard top-end bike frame would therefore be about 1 cBE.
