On my way home this bloke was parked outside a shop, waiting to pull out, and did so, just as I was about to pull alongside. He saw me just in time, stopped, and I rode round him. Then he caught me up and passed me through a pinch point, before left-hooking me. It didn't seem malicious, he was a just a doddery old bloke, but three bits of bad driving in about 30 seconds? Impressive.

But he's never had an accident in 50 years of motoring

I don't know why we don't have a compulsory driving test every 5 years once you hit 60 or 65. It'd weed old farts like him out and make the roads safer for everybody.

In a way that's like attacking the symptom not the cause.

What we need in the long term is a society less reliant on the personal motor vehicle so that people with mobility problems who presently "need" a car but are becoming a danger, are not restricted by the lack of a car.

Say, for instance said doddery old bloke lives in a village with poor transport links or on a sink estate and feels unsafe stood at a bus stop with gangs of chavs knocking about...

It's understandable that there is a resistance to just wiping out driving licences

You're probably right there. It was in quite a rough part of Newcastle. And there was a gang of chavs outside the shop he was pulling away from.

Did you think that up all by yourself? I'm impressed!

I wonder why it is all the younger drivers who so perfect who get stung by huge insurance premiums.

It's not just young male drivers who are a problem on the roads, the old doddery ones are also an issue that need looking at.

What really needs looking at is driver behaviour, whatever their age. We need fewer cameras and more police who can deal with things on a case by case basis instead of pointless generalisations. I bet there are not many 65 years old plus lorry drivers, bus drivers, white van men and all the other class of drivers we see villified on these threads so often. I am not suggesting for one instant that some older drivers shouldn't be off the road, but to pick out a single group of people makes little sense.

What would your solution be to weed out the younger reckless driver, say under 25 year olds.

That's just wrong. EVERYONE should retest every 5 years.
