Hi, I've got a front wheel puncture on my commute bike which has a thru axle. I'm trying to get the wheel off but the unscrewing of the Allen bolt only seems to take the bolt out of the fork on other side but doesn't move on the disc side !

Any suggestions would be most welcome before I resort to taking it to my local bike shop ...

AFAIK the thru axle only screws into the far side fork. Once it is unscrewed from that side it should just pull out. At least that's how mine work.

Possibly support the wheel so it is not putting any vertical force on the axle while you are trying to pull it out?

OK, does it try to stretch the fork open because the one side's threads turn but the other side doesn't start poking out?

That's called ejectile dysfunction.

The cure is the mallet method.

Turn the axle two or three turns until the fork has spread a bit, then whack the fork in line with the axle, with a mallet. The other side should now break loose.Obvs you'll want tyo protect the paintwork with a suitable method of your choice. Now clean the axle and apply a little copper slip to the threads and head before refitting.
