Thru axle to QR conversion

Hi guys,
Long story short, I’m trying to fit thru axle fulcrum DB800 wheels into QR frame. Front was no problem but unfortunately stuck with the rear one as hub width is 142mm whereas frame clearance is 135mm. I have not been able to get any joy from Fulcrum technical support so have been searching on google and YouTube. Initially I was lead to believe that there is a conversion kit available but some people mentioned that because these are OEM wheels so fulcrum haven’t got the conversion option for this particular model? So the other option or should I say only option is to shave off 3.5mm end caps on both ends. Few guys have done it with success and according to them it’s a case of precision. I plan to take the wheel to a local machining company on Monday but thought will check to see if anyone has done it or any suggestions. Thanks in advance

Probably not going to happen. Easier to go wider with changeable end caps, but you've a huge issue with wheel dishing if the wheel was designed for 142.

Are you sure about this? It's my understanding that 135mm QR and 142mm TA are (in terms of wheel geometry, cassette location, chainline etc) dimensionally the same about the wheel's centreline; the caps on the TA setup just extending another 3mm each side to engage cutouts in the frame for better location when fitting.

I know some hubs have different end caps to allow swapping between different standards as you elude to; if the OP's isn't one of them then it's probably more straightforward to replace the hub / wheel..

Hi, you are right in the sense that in terms of the wheel geometry dimensions are the same as both hub sizes i.e. thru axle and QR are actually 142mm. However where the difference of that 7mm comes into the equation between 142mm on thru axle vs 135mm on QR is based on the shape of the frame. With thru axle the hub ends sit completely inside the frame whereas for QR you have cut outs also referred to as drop outs and that where those 3.5mm nubs fit in to the frame secured by a skewer. Some wheel manufacturers do offer interchangeable end caps but doesn’t seem to be case in this instance. Yes if no joy then I suppose it would be cheaper to go for a new wheel as rebuilding the wheel is more expensive option.
