Thunderbird 3 glitch

As a long-time user of Thunderbird email, and having only recently gone from 2.0.0.24 to 3.-something, just wondered if anyone else has encountered this issue with Thunderbird 3? If using IMAP, it appears that whatever settings / deselection of options you try, it frequently insists on polling the folders and re-downloading messages that don't need to be. The only way I can see to prevent it is to prevent any kind of timer-related fetching of mail at all, which is not really on.

Whether this is a mail synchronisation issue or not, it looks like a bug to me.

Have wound back to 2.0.0.24 for the moment - all perfect there.

There seems to be some internet scuttle about the problem. Think I'll keep a watch on the forums and see what people come up with.
