For me the advantage of a triple is not so much the granularity (or lack of big gaps between gears) - it's the fact that I can do most of riding on a single chain ring.(the middle one).
Way back in the mists of time I worked on increasing my cadence so a 39T ring suits me just fine. I've ridden a compact since but even on a very nice light CF (Spesh Tarmac) I found it a real struggle to find the right gear. FWIW I've a 12-30 cassette on the back AND have dropped the 30T chain ring down to a 28. Wuss? Moi? Yup, and I don't care. On something like the Bryan Chapman Memorial you want the lowest gear imaginable and then lower still on the Sunday morning to get up the hill out of Dolgellau after 400km the day before and less than two hous sleep.
