I don't like the notion that uni courses are being chosen in preference to trying to get a job (and building a big range of debts up as they go).

University is more than just a course. Its about growing up, learning to live independently away from home, having fun and making life long friends, developing socially and emotionally....all within a safe environment.

Mum's never stop Mumming.

My Mum once saw a feature on the local news, about a lady who was 100. Asked how she felt she said "Well, I'm relaxed now, because I've just got my younger daughter into a home...."

I knew a 89 year old woman many years ago who did voluntary work at Age Concern "to help old people"

Blimey, Oli's 4!!!! Time flies her on CC!

Yes, I know! 4, and obsessed by dinosaurs. He's going to be a palaeontologist when he grows up, so he tells us. He was in hospital last week with mastoiditis, and told the nurse "Spinosaurus ate mainly fish. I can run as fast as a Spinosaurus". Nurse said "Oh, so you would win a race with one then?" "No," says Oli, "We'd finish together, because I can run as fast as a Spinosaurus, not faster". He was in and out in a couple of days, I reckon they discharged him when they couldn't stand any more dinosaur facts.

Max is 2 now, and currently obsessed with things with wheels, especially tractors and <sigh> Volvos. But he loves his Toddlebike:

Thanks all>

Beebo, I'll probably be in bits too when we finally drop her off wherever she goes, it'll be the end of an era.
@ Summerdays, Hope all goes well tomorrow!

Its not the end of an era but it is a transition. For a few weeks the house will seem empty but then before you know it term will be over and you will be trying to work out where to put all the stuff she has brought back for the holiday.

Our two did a round the world gap year together between school and uni. Watching them walk off into departures at Heathrow was tough but they had a whale of a time and came back just fine but changed people - much more confident, self reliant, mature and worldly.

Talking of costs,my son went to a meeting the other day, from the four main Engineering companies. If he gets an interview he could be in the running for 12000 pounds a year for university, and it doesnt get paid back. He also gets to work for them in the holidays at full pay too, there were quite a few there, fingers crossed.

You don't need to go to uni to do any of this though, and the safe environment is a relative thing.
A school friend of my eldest went to study law in Kingston (he'd be 21 now). He went on a drinking session with his mates last summer after winning a bet that he could go without alcohol for 28 days. totally hammered and in a moment of madness decided he was going to try and swim the width of the Thames. He didn't make it

I remember our eldest when she was about 4 wispering in my ear when I put her to bed one night "Dad, do you know what's bigger than dinosaurs? Giants!"

My eldest little boy, who happens to be 22 and 6'3", is off to Australia for three months on saturday. Doesn't seem all that long ago he was born. They grow up so quickly.
