Being only 5'6" it can be a pain the arse getting the right fit for clothing, and especially for cycling. I have so far refused to shell out on tights or bib shorts as I will be buying on-line and want to make sure the stuff fits. So I'm looking for a decent brand that will fit someone of my stature with a waist of between 30 and 32. I have picked up some kit from Rapha which fits great because their sizing chart is accurate, but a couple of hundred quid for tights or shorts seem a bit excessive!

Can anyone recommend anything?

dhb is wiggle's own brand and is good value for money.
They do free returns through collectplus so you could try a couple of different sizes.

Personally I prefer Castelli as this fits me best, but is more expensive than dhb

I'm 1.70m what I believe is 5.7''m, my waist is also between 30 and 32 (30 to small, 32 quite comfortable) and I wear size S for bottom Gore clothes.
I find their equipment very good. Less trendy than Rapha, but widely distributed and therefore easily to find on discount. So with discount it's for me the best value.
NB1 : long tights might be a little bit long for you, but it should be fine for short bibs or 3/4.
NB2 : for the top I take size M in Gore.
If you want to stay on the trendy side, there is Café du Cycliste from France. They tend to copy Rapha's style but remain cheaper. I never tried their bottom items but have 2 jerseys.
I read reviews (in non commercial fora) saying their bibs are very good.

How much difference does a bib make? Compared to padded shorts and a t shirt let's say... 80 quid still seems very expensive to me

Impsport, made to measure, good enough for the GB team for many years so they will do me.

I love my bibs, but I always go to a shop to try them on, sizing is so variable across brands and even different lines.

I'm 5'9 and 32" in Castelli i'm a Large...

Pad is definitely the most important element for me (assuming they fit, of course) and the pad on the dhb Aeron gets hot and uncomfortable within a couple of hours for me, compared with my RH+ bibshorts with a CyTech pad.
I reckon the dhb Aeron Pro is probably well worth the difference in price.
