She wasn't. The first ship to use SOS was the Cunard Liner Slavonia in 1909. They were sending the Marconi distress signal CQD (means All Stations : Distress) when the assistant suggested they also start sending out the SOS signal which became the standard after the sinking.The first passenger vessel to send an SOS. Radio operator told "you might as well, you might never get another chance".
