Not much traffic this morning so relaxed ride in, lovely weather then a black cab overtakes me goes through two red lights then as he's about to join single line of queueing traffic he pulls his cab right over to the kerb into the cycle lane completely blocking it. He knows he can't drive up the inside of the queue as there's no room. Hey guess why he does it so to block cyclists using the lane. I just rode up over the pavement and bumped down the kerb once passed him. he then pulled the cab out of the cycle lane acting like he didn't do it deliberately. Moron.

Ignorant and nasty and totally predictable. They just enjoy being as creative as possible in cutting cyclists up in as many different ways they can think of. Must take a lot of effort to keep remembering all day to drive so badly.

On another point. Riding through Wood Green, London the other night on a clear road with little traffic when some low life scum throws an empty coke can at me. Lucky it only hit my leg. Could have been nasty had it hit me in the face etc. Didn't say anything to the moron as you never know if they have knives etc and if an idiot is going to do such a thing who knows what else they're capable of.

I think cars are allowed in the cycle lane if the cycle lane has a dashed white line. I might be wrong about that though.

Cycle lanes. These are shown by road markings and signs. You MUST NOT drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a solid white line during its times of operation. Do not drive or park in a cycle lane marked by a broken white line unless it is unavoidable. You MUST NOT park in any cycle lane whilst waiting restrictions apply.

Seem to get on ok with cabbies although they sometimes take up two lanes which is a a pain to everyone concerned, but did have some tit squirt water at me from one of those van passenger things which made me lose concentration.

It's a lane with a solid white line which means no they're not allowed to drive or park in it. In any case there was only a half a car's width from the kerb to the queueing traffic so there was no way he was plannning on undertaking the queue. The angle he drove towards the kerb was very acute and his front wheel was virtually touching the kerb so to make absolutely sure that no cyclist was going to get into the cycle lane.

Generally I find if they've pulled left far enough to block the cycle lane then they've left quite enough space for you to overtake them on the right - which is quicker and easier than jumping onto the pavement where you should be. Don't forget to wiggle your bum at them as you pull back in front either.

Slightly OT. I had to laugh about a Black Cab the other night, I was headding along Ferry Road, Edinburgh. I was wanting to turn right into the supermarket but I was too early, its a couple of junction down. So I indicated and pulled out of the wide cycle lane no problem. Two minutes later when I'm cycling along the middle of the road/ Hatching (out of the way) a Taxi shoots by in the cycle lane undertaking a queue of 20-30 cars, that must of annoyed the folks in the cars.

So THAT'S why the cycle lanes on Ferry Road are so generously wide. I must have missed the little pic of a taxi painted in them !

Didn't want to go past on the outside as I would have had to cut across traffic coming up behind me and then I'd be stuck in the middle of the road with the traffic just crawling and I'd have to get back on the inside again to access the bike lane. There were no pedestrians on the path in any case and it was the simplest way of getting round this ignorant taxi driver.

It's amazing how many people are intimidated from overtaking properly on the offside. It's actually very easy, and easier still to negotiate back across the lane of traffic to the cycle lane. With a bit of practice it's possible to negotiate back across two lanes of traffic.

For a lot of cyclists, undertaking is considered more convenient (no need to overtake, use the opposing lane and then cut back in) and is also perceived as being less risky - it's therefore not really "amazing" that the majortiy of cyclists prefer to undertake rather than overtake.

Don't know if you can still do this with modern taxis with the door locks but we used to open the nearside back door of naughty taxi drivers when they came to a stop. They have to get out to close it.
