To the commuter cyclist who passed me quite quickly on my left as I accelerated from traffic lights in The Avenue (a dual carriageway), Fareham ay about 5 this evening.

When I inevitably caught up with you at later lights, in your self-defined ASL 2 metres in front of the lights:

I said: So now I have to watch out for idiots passing me on the inside as well as traffic on the outside of me?

You said: Yeah, you look out for yourself and I'll look out for myself. I had a van up my arse.

I said: You plank. That is just fecking stupid. (I give the Irish version so as not to offend the forum as I obviously offended you because then...)

You said: Mind your language. (I'm sorry I said fecking, but you said arse).

Your undertaking was completely unexpected and caused me to veer to the right. Luckily the van driver gave me a 6 foot pass. If you are reading this I invite you to explain to me why you thought it was a good idea.

I hate it when people undertake. That's when silly commuter racing goes beyond silly. I doubt you'll find the culprit on here however; I can't imagine anyone on this site would behave in such a fashion.

You're probably right John. The post is more about getting it out of my system than any expectation of a discussion with him.

Had the same sort of thing today

I was at lights with my trailer, I had passed a slower rider on the approach to the (ahead only) lights, so stayed right of primary to leave space.

She had pulled up alongside the kerb, as lights changed I set off and after a few seconds knew from peripheral vision that I was well away (she was grinding uphill at about a 120rpm cadence)

I did make a point of double checking with a "lifesaver" over my left as I had the mule attached - good job I did as if I hadn't, though well clear of the other slower cyclist, a numpty saw the gap and powered through with such timing that without the "lifesaver" I'd have wiped him out with the mule

I did make an effort to try to embarrass him (scalp with a trailer is +9999 points IMO) but unfortunately I could barely keep up until a red light, which he sailed through

I don't like it either but you either have to keep that gap closed or leave it so open that there is room for someone to pass

the latter for me

Doing dangerous manoeuvres in silly commuter racing makes it void. You have to cycle safely.

I undertook someone a few weeks ago, not racing him though. He was on a fixed wheel, and after I passed him at pace, wobbled past me at some traffic lights, to jump them I suspect. Carried on wobbling in front of me in primary, and I'm sorry to say I got impatient and stamped on it past him.

It does make you think though: what do car drivers feel when we slower cyclists wobble past them and carry on holding them up?
