As Mort says, Portugal is a relaxed and friendly place to be.

Faro has a great atmosphere, but avoid the Algarve if you can: it's full of ex pats.

Enjoy the sardines.

You must try The Cataplana when you eat out one night. either the fish or the meat one. A Cataplana is a copper casserole, the ingredients are put in and the lid is sealed down with clips and the resulting food is wonderful. you will need lots of bread to mop up the juices.

A copper casserole? Is that how people like @Drago end up over there?

That's unlikely: he's usually in a stew!

In my limited experience, Portugal's cycle routes are very English: sometimes signed, sometimes not, sometimes excellent tarmac, sometimes deep gravel, sometimes continuous, sometimes ending with a high kerb into oncoming traffic, sometimes taking a six foot jump off the wall of a ruined house... then to cap it all, some are compulsory... enjoy! ;) but there's much less traffic than here and better weather, so it all seems easier to cope with.
