Sounds like you had a lot of fun. I have two gear suggestions. The first is that you were carrying too much for a bike like this. If you have any spare money, use it to reduce the load (both weight and volume). That will also help with your second issue: gearing. Bikes of this vintage do not have really low gearing. Depending on the drivetrain you may be able to lower the gearing a bit, but a lower luggage weight also helps a lot when climbing. Keep having fun............

Thanks for the advice willem but I actually found this out the hard way

...broken rear hub as you may know which was probably caused with the weight, but I 'couldn't' just turn around so continued on. Also the hills, I knew they would be a problem with only a 10 speed but it wasn't too bad (using the term loosely there). It was just a completely unplanned trip and the only bike I had so had to be done, which I do not regret in the slightest.
I'm thinking of getting a more suited bike for
when I go again as of course, I'm now hooked
