Can a car sit in the box then? I mean I assumed they had to keep clear of them...but I haven't read up on it

Advanced stop lines. Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic. Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked. If your vehicle has proceeded over the first white line at the time that the signal goes red, you MUST stop at the second white line, even if your vehicle is in the marked area. Allow cyclists time and space to move off when the green signal shows.
Laws RTA 1988 sect 36 & TSRGD regs 10, 36(1) & 43(2)

We can't see when the vehicles entered, we need a slo-mo action replay with Clint Mansell music for added drama.
they were obviously two muppets - so why get in front of them?
You're right, but sometimes I've been known to go in front, then mysteriously my (imaginary) shoelace has become undone.

Just sometimes mind.

I don't mean to sound harsh but if you, as a cyclist, are ignorant of the law in the matter, why do you expect drivers to have superior knowledge?

The driver's supposed to have taken a test.

Bikeability, Proficiency etc aside, it's sort of sad if it's got to a point where we expect people who haven't necessarily taken a test to know more than those who have.

BoaB is riding on the road. The Highway Code is aimed at, and applies to, all road users. Even pedestrians.

I don't expect him to know more. I expect him to know the same about those parts of the law that affect cyclists.

Still, it's only motorists who are actually tested on it and therefore should know it - because if they didn't, they (ideally) wouldn't be driving. The Highway Code is aimed at everyone, but realistically, there are going to be a hell of a lot of cyclists who've never read it. Pedestrians even more so.

I think we are entitled to expect higher standards from enthusiast road cyclists.
I think we are entitled to expect much higher standards from cyclists who video the errors of others and post them on the interwebs.

Culpable ignorance, the lack of knowledge or understanding that results from the omission of ordinary care to acquire such knowledge or understanding, is not a very good excuse for anything.

Your point on testing is taken. As it was the first time you made it.

Most video cyclists are well aware of the highway code, and wouldn't have asked about the law on ASLs because they would already have known that it's illegal for cars to be in them. It's therefore safe to say that people who are well-read on the Code will know about ASL law, and that supposedly includes drivers by mandate. It does not include cyclists, a decent amount of whom have not read it and don't care to, either.

To put it simply GregCollins, you can't assume that because a cyclist has not learnt the Highway Code, the average driver will not have done so, either.

You're really not getting the culpability thing are you?

If you operate a tonne-and-a-half of machinery in a public space, ignorance of the current rules relating to its operation is no defence.

If you ride a bike in the environment where such machinery is operated, and wish to document and comment on the performance of said operators, it would be wise to be aware of the rules in force regarding its operation.

Or risk looking a trifle foolish.

Was there ever any proof that that video is real, and not a PR stunt for 'Profusion Customs'? That video didn't seem to be featured in any newspapers or anything of the sort.
