The pie was not fully eaten - shock, horror!

It was a pork and Apple pie.

It was visually appealing but the foil casing aroused suspicions.

Taking a bite led to great disappointment. There was a lot of fresh air...

There was not enough filling for the lower crust with minimal pork content and an excessive amount of commercial apple sauce. The crust was biscuit like and tasteless and the pork was overpowered by the cloying sweetness of the apple sauce.

The remains are in the bin.

Edit - additional information
Source of pie - Burton's butchers, Pocklington

All is not lost as there is another butcher to investigate in Pocklington....
Nothing worse than oversweet apple sauce. We sometimes got pork pies with a layer of goosegogs in the top from Mansfield market. Very nice and sharp enough to compliment the pork.
Now that sounds interesting....

Was it a "drive thru" pie shop? Or do you always eat your pies in the car?

Normally I cycle to pie shops but I was heading home to Leeds after a drinkover at a pals in Pocklington. The pie was destined to be lunch - I'm not a believer in deferred gratification when investigating new pies. It was lucky to survive the journey between the butcher's and the car.

That must be about the most unappetising pie I've ever seen, more apple than pork - very, very wrong :headshake:

Photo 1 looks like a nice pie.
Photo 2 is just wrong!! The pork is too pink and mushy, there is far too much apple.

I guess that having a bad pie is 3.14 times more disappointing than any other food?

Btw Vernon, have you tried all the pie shops within a radius of twenty miles from your house?

Cleckheckmondwike and its environs remain unexplored along with a large part of the Aire Valley, Calder Valley and Dewsbury, Wakefield and Castleford areas.

There are many yet to be sampled in my usual cycling area which is mainly North and East Yorkshire and I'm not averse to cycling further than twenty miles to sample pie. Market Weighton is my next target....

Nothing in the Aire valley SE of Leeds is worth mentioning... most of it is a mess following the decline after Cawoods Coal and Texaco wound down their operations. Though Paley's, the bakers on Aberford Road in Woodlesford used to do a grand pork pie when I was a lad, I doubt they're still there...
