How many miles per pie do you average?

Twenty five to thirty miles per pie. Though it can drop depending on how piggish I'm feeling.

Today's pies were supplied by Laveracks of Holme-On-Spalding-Moore and Hagstons of Market Weighton.

First of all the Laveracks' pie. It promised much with a lovely deep golden brown crust. The filling was unusual in that it was a grey filling more aligned with Melton Mobray pies rather than the traditional Yorkshire Growler. The colouring is more to do with the cooking of the filling than the quality of the meat but sadly the filling was a tad underwhelming in flavour with little to suggest the presence of any herbs or spices. The crust was good quality with suitable crunchy resistance if a little thick and some jelly was present with little voidage. A competent but unremarkable pie.

The Hagstons pie is the most expensive to date and this created high expectations. The crust top was more aesthetically crimped to the casing and the filling was reassuringly pink and, unusually, chopped pork rather than minced. There was some voidage but this was suitably filled with a pleasant jelly. The filling had more flavour than the Laveracks' pie but this was undermined by it being oversalted. It was a better pie on the whole than Laveracks pie but its elevated price and saltiness prevented it from outscoring the tasteless competitor.

:Today's pie was purchased yesterday from Mounfield Butchers in Bubwith. It was a stand pie costing a very reasonable £3.50. I'd wanted a standard pork pie but they had sold out and I wasn't going to let the opportunity of sampling pie from this vendor pass me by.
In keeping to my pledge of eating not more than two pies per ride this specimen was kept overnight in the fridge for consumption and sharing at work today.

The crust was well made and flvoursome with a good firm texture to the hot water pastry. The pies was visually appealing and the size daunting for a solo effort at consumption - my colleagues were happy to assist with its eating. The filling was lightly spiced and had just the right amount of seasoning not to intrude upon the pleasures of the pork. There was a slight salty aftertaste which was not entirely unpleasant but capped the scoring at

Today's purveyors of pies were Greenwoods of Boroughbridge, Cockburns of Bedale and White's of Moreton-on-Swale.

I was greeted like a long lost friend at Greenwoods and my disappointment on finding that the pork and apple pies had sold out was soothed by being supplied with some oven fresh pork pies. The crust was perfect - dry, friable and not greasy. The jelly/gravy was a tasty enhancement to the spicy and lightly season pork filling that left a pleasant after taste. The pie could not be faulted in any aspect other than it being not being available in stand pie sizes at standard size prices.

10/10 - the first ever!

Moving on to Cockburns in Bedale 10/10 for salesmanship! I wanted pork and red onion pies. They had none. I left with pork and black pudding, pork and cranberry and a standard pork pie along with some millionaires shortbread and a bottle of Fentimen's orange jigger.
Only the pork and cranberry pie was consumed today. First impressions were not favourable. It was an open topped pie and the first bite had too much topping and too little pork and the balance was too much towards the sharpness of the cranberries. Subsequent bites revealed that there was a perfect balance between the pork, sharpness of the cranberries and the sweetness of the syrup containing the cranberries. I should have bought more! Great crust. Pie was served and eaten warm.

10/10 - the second perfect score

Finally White's of Moreton-on-Swale. The premises are easily overlooked as they are small and set back from the Bedale to Northallerton Road. Their hand made "Home baked pies" had grabbed my attention last year but I'd always had a full complement of pies before reaching the place. Today I forced myself and didn't regret it. The pie was duly bought and consumed further down the road in Northallerton. The crust was close to perfection but was a tad too dry possibly not enough lard in the pastry mix. The filling did what it should do - fill the pie with a pleasantly textured minced pork that was slightly peppery and pleasnantly spice. No jelly/gravy was present and this contributed to the dryness of the pie but didn't detract too much from its enjoyment.

Were purchased from Marley's butchers in Ripon during yesterday's Audax ride.

Pork and pickle.
Thinnest crust of pies sampled to date. Chopped pork filling with some jelly at the bottom. Pickle tasty and well balanced with the pork. Visually appealing.
8/10. £1

Pork, apple and black pudding.
Bought out of curiosity as it seemed to be a strange combination. Pork and crust as above. Apple added moistness and was a good intermediary for the pork and black pudding.
