Today's the day

Today is the day I have accumulated a fuel cost saving equal to the purchase price of my Dawes Giro 500.

I paid £420 on 7th October 2006 for the bike and various accessories.

The initial cost balance is now equal.


Replacement and additional parts include:- Two tyres, two chains, two sets of brake blocks, one cassette and a Tecso torch. That's another £100 in 2 1/2 years.

I might be properly balanced by this Christmas.

Ah, but have you accounted for fuel price fluctuations? I think you've got another 12 miles of cycling before you can rightfully claim to have made that £420 saving.

Already got them. I've not bought a 'commute' specific piece of clothing in the last two and a half years.
I've also got another seven bikes in the shed, so I consider all my clothing to be allied to those as well.

Oh yes, fuel prices have been tracked throughout.

I've had a Garmin for only part of the time I've had the Dawes. In the old days when the computer relied on the front wheel turning to accumualate the distance, there was a discrepancy due to the distance travelled with the front wheel off the ground.

What extra food. Its only 24 miles to work.

There's soap and showers at work and I shower every evening anyway.

My Saab only does about 23 knocking about so say, 28 average so I reckon I have saved about £250 - £300 since I started a year ago.

Have spent much more on gear though, though that has tapered off now I am set up with everything I need.

Still paying the fixed costs on the car, need to consider its future, shame to have it sat there costing money to tax, insure and depreciate but I dont really want to get rid and go down to 1 car, dont particularly need to financially and work pay me a car allowance so might not go down too well !

I calculated that I use 830 calories each way on my 15 mile commute. As the average daily intake for a male is 2500, I now take bananas, more cereal bars bread, crisps as well as my usual 11's and lunch.
