I like them best, stolen from the greenhouse nicely warmed by the sun still smelling of tomatoes - small and juicy.

my preference is for the big red jobs that dribble down your chin, but supermarkets don't stock these because they have to be bought and eaten pretty much on the same day.

We're fortunate in having a lebanese/polish grocery round the corner (with a lebanese bakery two doors down!) and I can pick my tomatoes up fresh each day. But......they're always imported from Turkey or Syria or somewhere, so not as sustainable as the supermarket jobbies

The good thing about greengrocers is that you get the opposite of the supermarket policy of charging a premium for ripeness. If these existed in Tesco they would be four-to-a-tray at £1.99 and labelled "Finest Ripe n Ready" or somesuch. In our greengrocers you'll get a MAHOOSIVE bagful for 50p, with "frying toms" scrawled on it in marker pen.

The residential home where I work there's a few who have allotments and a few months back I was forever having tomatoes thrust upon me.
I was too polite to say enough is enough. Tomato overload.

Love them all really. Grow Black Russian, Shirley, and those sweet wee yellow ones ….mmmmmm. Love making HM soup, sauces, eat em raw with a dusting of salt, straight from the greenhouse. The downside with tommytwo's (sorry tis what I called em as a babby) is the imported ones have no taste. Roll on next year when we have our own again. Scrummy Tommytwo's mmmmmmm.

Fried red toms on toast (with butter, natch) is one of life's great pleasures.

I love all sorts of Toms, tinned, fresh, big and fat, small Cherry, raw, cooked, what ever.
I have a very good local greengrocer who get's some fantastic big fat juicy Toms when in season.

Though.. I must say that I can only eat fresh tomatoes when they have been sliced or diced, I can't bite into a whole one like you would an apple. My mother was the same. Very strange.

Well, I get through 2 or 3 tins of chopped tomatoes a week in my veggie curries, but you don't want to know about those tomatoes, nor the tomato paste that I buy ...

I do like good normal size tomatoes, but I find them too variable in taste so now I nearly always buy cherry tomatoes instead. I select them individually, from a stall at the local weekly food market. I like them firm and 75-100% red. I eat them in salads, which I usually eat twice a week, all year round.

PS And like citybabe (below) I'm also a fan of also sun-dried tomatoes & olive oil!

O god I LOVE tomatoes!! especially straight from the greenhouse, but any will do. Not cooked tho, just as they are. I can eat the tiny ones like sweets by the punnetful. And sauces.....not the tinned gloop but real sauce, fresh tomatoes, herbs, olive oil, mmmmmmmm i can feel the munchies coming on.....................
