when i was a youngster, i completely abused an old peugeot racer, off jumps, down Old John in bradgate park, up kerbs etc. I managed to break/bend the rear QR axle a couple of times but never had a wheel (spoke) go. as the others have said, get a decent set of wheels built for you and they should last for ages.

Thanks again for all the replies.

Wheel's now with the wheelbuilder at the LBS who is going to fit top quality spokes and brass nipples, he reckons that should do it as the Mavics already have 32 spokes. That will set me back £47.20 which nicely accounts for the £50 I won on Monday pulling Gernany out of the hat in the works World Cup sweepstake....oh well!!

When you buy a new bike, everything has just been built and will relax. Stuff then needs to be adjusted etc. It could be that the spokes relaxed (so the wheel then became untrue) and then snapped.

I hope the wheel rebuild sorts out the problem

you just need a new rear wheel - CXP22 are very cheap rims and I bet the spokes are shamefully cheap too. Try CXP33 rims (much higher quality rim despite a similar name) with 36 DT Swiss DB spokes - you'll have no more trouble then.
