A 'Sportive' ain't a race, it is an event. If the 'competitors' were any good the they would be racing not dressing up and pretending.
I'm not knocking sportives, they are good things to take part in but there are always numpties who act inappropriately.

That's pretty much it. They are advertised in a way that will appeal to the idiots. People who are just there to do it for whatever reason they are doing it for, and understand that it isn't a race, get tarred with the same brush as the Clark Kent brigade.

explain what will happen if event rules are broken

Nothing I'm guessing?

That's all well and good, but on non closed roads a marshall will have no right to stop someone riding the public roads. You would also need to have hundreds of marshalls all along the event to watch out for miscreants.

You can have the right and authority if there is agreement.

A simple contract signed as part of the entry would be enough

You need a sanction. A racing licence can be taken away. You might get banned from one particular event, but I don't think there's a body overseeing sportif entries.

I think there's a tendency for people in "an event" to gain a sense of self-importance / entitlement and therefore behave like twats and aee nothing wrong with it. Add in "I'm doing it for charity" and there you go. This isn't really a cycling thing, but human nature. The 3 peaks challenge may well have same psychology - justifying in participants' minds unsafe driving (the distances & logistics alone entail driving whilst very tired especially under time pressure).

Rather than rules maybe the organiser should just spell out in robust language "don't behave like a twat just because it's for charity"

Many people and we have discussed it on here before may not have entered but will still do the ride. Some on this forum could not at the time see a problem in doing so, not sure what can be done about the problem other than using closed roads, but that will open another can of worms.
