It so happened, today one of my colleagues came in, along with missus and new-born babe. Aaaahhhhh bless! Sweetest little girl you can imagine, and good as gold, she didn't make a sound!

Name? Rhea.

It's not on the list - I looked. Nor for that matter is my first name - which is a bit more mundane.

But Rhea? Fine, a very distinguished name, the Earth-Mother of ancient mythology and all that (also one of Saturn's principal moons). But what sort of nickname is the poor mite going to pick up at school? Have doting Mum and Dad considered that?

So - anyone with a name they wish they hadn't - or know someone else so afflicted?

A woman at work brought her newborn in a couple of years ago, trying to project some interest I asked his name , "Henry" she said.

I suppose the difficulty with names is that the ones that sound great on an adult, like Henry, don't necessarily sound great on a kid.

Oi, my 8 month old is called Henry.. and everyone seems to love it.. or they are too bloody polite to say otherwise.
Reaction I get is that it's nice to hear a classic old name.

That's dire.

Ian don't get me wrong I love the name, but a year or two ago I hadn't heard the name for twenty or thirty years. I called my son George fifteen years ago when it was an old name not in common use , now it's as usual to hear a George as a Jack or Harry. My point was that proper solid adult names can be be a bit surprising on a newborn.

I think that whilst a name does make a first impression ... on the whole you just get used to it... When my first child was born, the names of the babies we got to know varied from the common, traditional, rare and ones that I had never even heard of before (and since!!). But you just get used to the name and generally comes to fit the child.

None of my children's names appeared in the top 50 when they were named it... although they have all been creeping up the tables since.

We made a concerted effort to look at the list of top names for the last few years just to make sure that our sproglets wouldn't be landed with summat common

So we went for Fionnlagh - Finlay (Finn/Finlay/Oi!!!!!!!) and Matilda/Tilly

Mrs JP is responsible for the gaelic spelling, I put it down to her pikey Irish roots and I've made sure that she will take responsibility for teaching the poor kid how to spell his name!
