I'm sure that many of us got caught up in the downpours last week. I was drastically soaked one day on the way home. Didn't bother me too much as I was as wet as I was going to be in seconds, and it was warm.

One problem I do come across though is when it's too cold to cycle without a neck/face warmer. I have all the wet weather gear of the rest of my body, but with the neck tube I use at present, it clings to my nose mouth and make it very difficult to breath......almost like being 'water boarded ' (I'd imagine.)

I find it too hot to use my neoprene motorbike face mask, but unbearably cold to have no face/neck protection in extremely cold, lashing rain/sleet.

The problem only arises a few times a year but Winter is approaching........has anyone come up with a solution to this problem, or found an ideal piece of kit?

I have tried everything, DHB did (or still do ) http://www.wiggle.com/dhb-aw13-windproof-windtex-face-mask/ a face/nose mask thing but within about 5 mins your pulling it down as when you hit your first hill you start to feel suffocated and your glasses mist up badly, I've been looking for something that holds off from your face further but have yet to find it?

So for the time being I'll stick to the my buff.

I've got a balaclava thingy that has small cut outs around the mouth and a nostril vent - it worked well (when I used to cycle in the cold and wet, which I no longer do!) although took a slight bit of getting used to, especially drinking through the perforated mouth area but it didn't have the same amount of "water-boarding" feeling as a buff or a closed mask and didn't steam up glasses as it allowed air to flow out mouth and nostrils.

You do have to remember to wash it every now and then or the mouth area becomes a bit of a germ warfare hazard with saliva and snot and sticky drink gubbings.

I cannae find a pic of it via google, but will try to find it once I am back from walking the dogs to see what brand it is. I think I know where it is...

If it's any consolation, some time back, the GLW and I were travelling back along the A.1 in some seriously heavy rain. We stopped for petrol and at the next pump was a soggy looking motor cyclist. During idle conversation, I asked him how do motor cyclists keep dry in such condidtions. His answer - We don't - ! To stop water ingressing down the 'neck gap', he personally used a Terry towel nappy. A bit hot for us manual cyclists, but I find that a buff from Aldi - much cheaper than Cotswold - has much the same effect. Yes, you'll probably get hot, but then hot or wet inside; your call - !
