I actually sent a girl in our office, who had worked here for 4 years to a colleague to show her a long weight, she actually went!! It caused a lot of amusement when she had gone!

Stabila. No arguments. Best bubbles in the business.

Go to a proper builder's merchants (not B&Q etc) and you'll likely find a "gift pack" with two or three levels.

Most of my levels are old and good. Mine are 10", 2', 3', 4', 6' lengths.

Do check, even the good ones, that the bubble is level though.
Dad bought a cheap Aldi level and set the conservatory windows, onto the dawarf walls he built, with it. When I fitted the radiator under the window board there was 3/4" out of level over the 4' radiator top. I couldn't have the radiator on a slant and the conservatory was finished so I couldn't demolish and start that again.
I showed Dad how far out his level was. It is better suited for setting the fall on drains I think!

This will help him keep the courses (of bricks/blocks) at the same height when laying the muck (mortar) down with the trowel.

I got done on that as a kid. One of my first jobs, about 13 years old, saturday boy in our local butchers. I can remember it now..."our scales have broken, could you pop next door and ask for a long weight". They thought it was hilarious. That and locking me in the fridge.

We used to stick a pound coin on the floor with epoxy or something (as kids) One day one smart chap returned 5 minutes later with a hammer and chisel.

We (and that is the royal "we") has a number of levels, ranging in size from iddy-biddy all the way up to 8 foot.

An 8-footer (gufaw!) makes it soooo much quicker and easier to lay a patio than fiddling around with pegs and bits of string! (lay a slab, plonk the level on, lay next slab, plonk the level on both slabs, etc!)

I hope it wasn't a dumpy level he was after. And I know that dumpies are old school, replaced by modern automatics, but I still think of them as dumpies.
Of course, you'd need to buy a staff, and a chain boy too but it is christmas....

Stabila were the gold standard about five years ago, and probably still are. I have a 1.8 metre Type 96-2 which is a joy for setting out shelves and worktops, and a bit useful in the garden too. For long range stuff up to about 40 metres, I bought a Stabila lazer level when they first came out about 10 years ago. Blooming accurate but a fiddle to set up. I'm sure that things have improved vastly since then.

Do not by anything in a DIY shed, or a builders' merchant. Buy tools at an online tool website having Googled the tool model. I know it's cruel, but you will save a lot of money.
