I checked my Dawes Super Galaxy, for the first time, on a Ryanair flight from Edinburgh to Beziers on Easter Sunday this year. I was fairly apprehensive but everything went smoothly. I used the CTC bike bag. I removed the pedals and turned the drop handlebars sideways and under to protect the gear levers. I left my bar bag (filled with tools and pedals) and my paniers (empty) on the bike. The hardest part was standing in the queue to check in (to get the luggage labels to stick on before taking the bike to the oversize luggage conveyor belt. My bike went on with about 2cm to spare and weighed in at 19kg.The theory that if the handlers can see that it is a bike they will treat it with care, was borne out at Beziers where I was able to witness the handler putting my bike on the conveyor ever so gently and carefully. Go for it.

Good luck with your trip, Cyclotron! I set off from the Costa del Sol at the end of June for a two month motoring tour (on my own) through western Spain, Portugal, France, Germany, Holland and the UK. My bike will be on the back of the car and from about 13 July I hope to cycle down the Danube from its source in Donaueschingen to Passau - or at least as far as I can get in about a week, without forgetting I'm also a tourist! I want the trip to be flexible, for I have no desire to cycle in the rain! It would therefore be rash to book all accommodation in advance apart from the first night, but I'm not keen on having to search for somewhere to stay at the end of a long day. This is where the iPad will come in handy. I have the Bikeline guide (Part 1)and Cicerone's "The Danube Cycle Way", both of which are very informative.

Holy thread revival Batman.

We are considering/planning next years holiday. We would probably drive with bikes to Donaueshingen whic I understand is the beginning of the Danube Cycle way and spend about 12 days cycling along the river. However getting back to the car is causing me a bit of a logistic challenge.

Does anyone know if we can get a train or boat back to Donaueshingen from Linz or Grein?

You can get a train back to Donaueshingen from Linz for 79€ but it will take six hours or so and involve up to four trains.

By the time you get near Donaueshingen by river you'll be needing a kayak or coracle or something of similar shallow draft
