Found in the Yorkshire hills ...
Day 1 comes almost past son no. 2's old house in Brampton but he lives about 6 miles from the route now. He may be working that day though.

Femmes route comes near me on day 1 when they're heading out of Leeds towards Meltham. Day 2 for them is a brute though; Winnat's Pass followed by five other climbs.

They do still rally on Epynt. I found out by chance a couple of years ago when I was in the area for an orienteering event.
I was paying for fuel at Sennybridge when I realised the lads in the cafe were talking rallying so I asked.
The rally was on that weekend, so I gathered information and went to spectate. Spectators had to pay (£10?) and drive a set route along range roads to well organised parking very close to the active stage. Good view of the cars over a wide area, great atmosphere, free programme, good value. Mix of historic and club level cars. Recommended.
It seems to be on every year - google Rally Epynt
Is stage 3 actually using range roads? I can't tell from the map on the website. If so hopefully the TdeF will organise similar parking arrangements on the range.
This brings the conversation back to bike racing......

Thought I'd replied to this the other day sorry but today's announcement has confirmed it is doing the B4519 climbing up to the Garth viewpoint (which is where I'm thinking of watching) past The Drovers and onto the B4520 to drop down through Upper and Lower Chapel to Brecon so no range roads. For me the Cote D'Epynt is the pick of the climbs for combination of length and gradient but is probably too early to see any decent action. Caerphilly will be rammed and I suspect Rhigos will too (probably the closest thing in appearance to an Alpine climb I've seen in the UK). Storey Arms also likely to be busy and you'll see them coming for miles with a stunning backdrop but the climb itself is boring, I did it in my biggest gear back in the day. The climbs aren't categorised yet but I'm guessing a mix of 4th and 3rd cat.

I drove over that road in our camper van a few months ago when the main A470 was closed at the Eastern end of Brecon, and we were heading North to Aberdovey. Had done it quite often previously, but not for a few years, and we usually turned left over the ranges rather than on to Builth.

I am hoping to be on the Rhigos when they come through cannot wait.

That is where I'm hoping to watch it from too.

I was a bit disappointed with the Welsh route and thought they could have done some better climbs but looking at Stages 1 and 2 they seem to have actively gone out of their way to avoid hills if at all possible, especially in the Lake District.

I think the Lakes climbs are all a bit sketchy for a stage 2 Tour peloton tbh
